The term escutcheon comes from the Latin for shield and was first used to describe shield shaped emblems on heraldry and coats of arms in Medieval Europe. Over time, as people wanted more privacy and the use of doors became more common, escutcheons were adapted to refer to the small, functional shields that were used to protect keyholes from wear and tear and banish draughts. Shown above in our antiqued brass finish, this escutcheon is lovingly crafted from solid brass and antiqued for a subtle aged appeal.
