Reminiscent of a shield, or suit of spades in a deck of cards, our Islay Escutcheon plate is a nod to our gothic inheritance that will bring a delightful touch of grandeur to your door. Handcast from solid, natural brass and featuring a similarly shaped flap, it will add decorative interest as well as protect your keyhole and keep draughts at bay.
The term escutcheon comes from the Latin for shield and was first used to describe shield shaped emblems on heraldry and coats of arms in Medieval Europe. Over time, as people wanted more privacy and the use of doors became more common, escutcheons were adapted to refer to the small, functional shields that were used to protect keyholes from wear and tear and banish draughts.
