How to make your home more inviting
with outdoor lights

Whether used to signal a vacant room for the travel weary, to define roadsides and pathways at night or to communicate between ships, outside lamps have always been a symbol of connection sending a message of comfort in the form of light across the night.

The same very much still applies today. Stylish outdoor lighting not only sets the tone for the rest of your home, it also creates a warm and welcoming feel that cheers up a gloomy evening, gives us a sense of domestic joy whenever we return home and generates an inviting appeal for visitors. Here we have compiled some of our best advice on how to use outdoor lighting to create a warm and welcoming feel to your home.

1. MAKE A STATEMENT

The entrance to your home is the first thing everyone sees, so well-placed lighting is essential to ensure it looks warm and inviting. This is also the best place to make an impression by choosing a large statement light to usher your guests in. Our Canterbury Lanterns have long been Jim Lawrence favourites among customers as they combine a traditional design with modern lighting technology for beautiful, practical and durable porch lights. These can be fitted as hanging lanterns or used as wall lights when combined with one of our clever wall brackets

2. MAKE A FEATURE OF YOUR PORCH

If you are lucky enough to have an outside porch, make the most of it by opting for a centrally placed ceiling light, or echo the symmetry of your front door by placing a wall light on either side of it. If you don’t have the space, consider fitting a single wall light above your house name or number, or over decorative outdoor planting, potted plants or low level shrubs for a sophisticated look.

3. COMPLEMENT WITH MATCHING DOOR FURNITURE

For beautiful, classic styling for your front doors, match your lighting with handles, knockers, bells and letter plates in the same finish. An alloy of copper, brass is perfect for outdoors as it does not corrode and incorporates natural earthy tones that is warm and welcoming. It also works well with all natural building materials like brick, stone, wood and plaster.

If you are looking for a more contemporary alternative, consider one our painted finishes on your door furniture. Our matt black and polished finishes are applied in a powder coating process that creates a smooth, durable finish that will withstand the worst of our British weather.

4. CONSIDER WALL LIGHTS

Fitting external wall sconces on either side of a door is a classic lighting scheme that provides excellent all round light as well as a welcoming glow. For formal appeal, try a larger wall carriage lantern such as the Finsbury, Chelsea or Somerton; while for a more relaxed approach, our Coach and Peacock lanterns have a country cottage vibe that customers love.

If you have steps leading to your front door, make sure they are well-lit to prevent accidents. Step lights or small recessed lights can be installed along the risers or under handrails to provide subtle yet effective illumination. Our Newport Downlight is an excellent wall lighting solution for providing subtle, yet efficient light for steps.

5. HIGHLIGHT ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES

If you are lucky enough to live in a home with a host of architectural features such as gables, columns, arches or beams, one of the most effective ways to make it more inviting is to use light to illuminate them, so drawing attention to their craftsmanship.

Even without specific features, all homes have unique textures such a brick, plaster, wood and cladding that could benefit from being lit up. Uplighters cast light upwards, creating dramatic shadows and adding depth to features, while classic wall lights wash your walls with light creating a balanced look and subtle glow that makes your home appear warm and welcoming.

6. ILLUMINATE PATHWAYS & DRIVEWAYS

Adding lights to your driveway not only guides visitors safely to your home but also adds a touch of elegance and charm. Consider using smaller wall lights, like our Harbour and Clipper wall lights that can be fitted to fence posts, trees or low level walls to provide ample illumination.

Arrange wall lights to outline paths around your home to ensure safety by preventing trips and falls but also making a visually pleasing line of light that leads to your front door. Our Newport Downlighter makes an ideal wall light for brightening up paths around your home.

7. CONSIDER CONDUIT

The perfect solution for transforming ugly external wiring into a stunning outdoor feature, our antiqued brass conduit is a thing of beauty that doesn’t look out of place on any external wall. Designed to be used indoors as well as out, and with a range of compatible outdoor lights, it will add a touch of heritage style to your scheme.

8. ENHANCE YOUR PLANTING

Strategically placed plants, pots and hard landscaping is essential for boosting your curb appeal and lighting can take it to the next level. Use spotlights and floodlights to highlight trees, shrubs, and garden beds. For tall trees, place a spotlight at the base to accentuate their height and grandeur. For smaller plants think about using small lights to create interesting shadows and depth. We make a range of beautiful, solid brass plant supports that not only keep your perennials neat and tidy, but can also be used as a stake for hanging lanterns along paths or in planting schemes.

9. FESTOON LIGHTS

For instant lighting, fairy lights and lanterns are fantastic for adding a cozy, festive feel to your garden. If you don’t have an outdoor plug socket, you can plug them indoors through a window opening and with the aid of water protective plug socket boxes. Drape them over porches, patios, or along fences and shrubs to create a soft, twinkling effect.

10. THE MAGIC OF FIRE LIGHT

Candles should not just be reserved for interiors. They lend themselves beautifully to garden lighting, especially around eating and entertaining areas. Our Hurricane Candle Sconce brings a touch of the past to the present and adds a beautiful layer of flickering light to walled gardens.

And don’t forget warmth! If you want to enjoy the outdoors all year round, you would benefit from a source of heat to keep you warm. Our Oakham Cast Iron Fire Bowl creates a stylish focal point for outdoor entertaining that has all the joyful reminiscences of campfires, an enduring warmth we can all enjoy.
